Broken Bridges and Bullet Holes

There's this bridge that I cross over at least 14 times a week. It is probably the worst bridge in Oklahoma! If you go under it, you can see how the supports are crumbling away and you can even see daylight through the actual bridge part. There's holes that big on the surface. Well, instead of tearing it down and building a brand new bridge, like they did for Twin Bridges over by Wyandotte, they are trying to salvage it. WHY? It is such a crappy bridge. I mean, the speed limit on this bridge is 35 mph. That should tell you something, right? Right now the west lane is closed and each lane is using one lane. They have a stop light at either end to let traffic go one direction while the other direction is stopped. They stripped it down to the re bar in places. I don't understand their reasoning. Sure, it would be a HUGE pain in the arse and a great big ole hassle to detour traffic, but come ON, this bridge needs to come down! I guess we gotta trust the engineers on this one. I'm no engineer, so I'm hoping they know what they are doing.
*
While I was stuck at the red light at the bridge, I was waiting behind this brand new Ford pickup. It had those stupid looking stickers on it to make it look like it had been shot up. Why, in heaven's name, would you want fake bullet holes on the tailgate of your brand new pickup? It doesn't look cool, it looks stupid. Tell me this, if you had a brand new pickup, and someone actually shot the tailgate all up, and you had genuine bullet holes, would you call your insurance guy up immediately and have them patched up? Or would you leave them because they looked cool?
When Mike and I first got together (which it occurred to me last night has been 16 years this week) he drove this old beat up car. A Datsun. That sucker was the best car ever, it would go and nothing could stop it. Starter crap out on it? No problem, just park on a hill, shove off, pop the clutch, and you were gone! And it was SO FUN to drive. It would get on it, now. It may have looked like a piece of crap, but, I wish we still had that piece of crap, it got excellent gas mileage (back when gas was $1.15 and we were griping that it shouldn't be over a dollar, jeez, how innocent we all were).
But, this car had, you guessed it, a bullet hole on the back right fender. A real bullet hole. The entire car looked like a heap of junk rolling down the road, so Mike never even bothered patching up that one single bullet hole no one noticed. Man, we were so cool, ahead of our time, but cool.

About Last Night

I did it. I skipped my first class. The head ache got to be too much for me. I suffered through Algebra so I could talk to my Exceptional Learner teacher. She said it was okay and that she understood, but her body language spoke otherwise. She'd gone through a lot of trouble for last night's class, and I really hated to miss it. For once, it looked interesting. Then, she called Mike's cell phone later that evening. I must've accidentally given her Mike's cell # instead of my own. I've done that before. I'm so use to dialing it when someone asks for my number, I give them Mike's. Oops. His is 1914 and mine is 1913. You can see how I'd get mixed up, right?
*
Anyway, I went home, took 2 tylenol pm's, stuck a wet rag on my head and suffered for an hour or so in bed. Mike and Shael got home and I got up and cooked something to eat. I'm good at making something out of nothing. Mike thinks we don't have a thing to eat in the house when all we have is stuff you have to cook. His idea of food in the house is bread, milk, cereal, eggs, peanut butter and jelly. Then there's the star crunch and nutty bars that he tempts me with. Stick a package of meat in the freezer and he no longer considers it food in the house.
*
But, before I go further on that subject, after I miraculously made a meal out of thin air, Mike asked me if I wanted to watch a movie with him. I said sure and I sat down to watch it and the next thing I knew my chin was resting on my chest. I gave up and went to bed around 8:30. I have no idea how The Longest Yard ends. In fact, I barely know how it begins! I'll have to watch it again when I have no PM medicines coursing through my veins.
*
Isn't my little Corbin cute? He is a yapper, though. Man, I hope he out grows that.
*
I'm out of here. I'm at the school printing some homework out and I thought I'd post a pic of my Corbin and check my email an all that jazz. Since I no longer have a computer at home. *sigh*

Corbin Bleu - Push It To The Limit

Hey, it's Corbin Blue Heeler!

What A Pain

If I have learned anything from Mikey, it's to work through pain. You know how you hear about husbands who are such big babies and can't do anything if they have a little boo boo or a small ache or pain? Not my husband. He can (and has) work in just about anything. Pain or no pain. The only exception being his shoulder and it turned out that he had to have surgery to repair and replace the muscle that had torn away from the bone. OUCH. He was not physically able to move his arm.
So, for me to want to skip two classes because I have a head ache, well, I can't bring myself to do it. As much as I'd like to, because that evening class is such a bore, I will sit there and suffer until 9:00 tonight. I still have an hour before my next class starts.
*
There's thunder and lightening out today. I kind of like it, because it seems like such a summer time thing, but I kind of don't because I realize it's a fall time thing. I just don't care much for fall. I don't like to see the trees become bare again, even though the process is beautiful. I don't like colder temps, even though it makes it easier on the electric bill. It always seems that each year when I go swimming for the last time, I don't realize it at the time that it's the last time I'll be going until next summer. I try to enjoy each time like it's my last, but some how, I always think if I'd've known it was going to be my last time, I might've enjoyed it just a little bit more.
*
Shael didn't have school on Friday last week so I spent the day trying to entertain her. She had her cousin over to spend the night and I ended up taking them to a Joplin theater to watch Sydney White. A movie I'd never even heard of, and wasn't playing in Grove where it's closer and cheaper. So, off to Joplin I took them. I dropped them off at the theater and went on a little shopping spree. More like a "window" shopping spree. I hardly bought anything that wasn't a necessity, like toilet paper or fabric softener. I suppose fabric softener isn't completely necessary, but it makes life a whole lot better with it.
When we got home that night, I fixed supper for the whole gang then Mike and I left the girls at the house and we went for a bike ride. It was perfect weather, even if I did have to put my hoodie on on the way home. Just like the swimming, every time I take a night ride, or even a day ride for that matter, I think it will probably be my last one without a coat. But so far, each time I go out, I haven't needed that big bulky thing yet.
Saturday, Mike went out with the "boys" and was gone all day. I mean, like from 9:30 in the morning until 1:30 at night. I took the girls with me to the Pelican Fest parade in Grove. It was at 10:00 in the morning and was over by 10:40. After that, we headed on out to the actual Pelican Festival. It took us a whole 10 minutes to look through all the booths and then we were at a loss as to what to do until 1:00 when the main attraction started. The main attraction being the Flying Cobras drill team out of Kansas City, MO. They were in the parade, also, and they were so good, Shael couldn't wait to watch them at 1:00.
You know me, the queen of wasting time, I found something to do until 1:00. We went to the "chicken swap". It's a flea market that has an actual chicken swap, people can swap their chickens or just put them up for sale for any person who wants or needs live chickens. They also have ducks, geese, rabbits and sometimes a turkey or two. Lots of people have house plants for sale, too. You can usually find somebody trying to sale their puppies, kittens, dogs or cats.
This Saturday we found three Chinese Pugs for sale. You know, like the dog on Men In Black. Shael fell in love and wanted one so bad. I have to admit they were cute as could be. When I asked (only out of curiosity) how much she was asking for them she said "Two fifty, but I'll take two for the male". You and I know "two-fifty" means $250.00 and "two" means two hundred smackeroos. But, to Shael, that meant $2.50 and $2.00. Her face lit up and she said "Mama!" Before she could say anything else I set her straight. Yes, I had a five dollar bill in my purse, but no, that woman would laugh us out of the place if I offered it to her for both dogs. Poor Shael! She pouted over that for quite a while, until we went off back to the Pelican Fest.
And found six blue heeler pups for sale. I asked the old man how much and he went in to this big story about how they weren't even his, but his great-niece's (and aren't they all great?) and she was needing some money out of them, yadda yadda yadda. Finally I asked, Okay, so how much? And he goes "Weeeeeeellllll, I neeeeeeed $300 a piece out of them. But, I'll take ten dollars, and that's negotiable." I held back my smile and laughter and counter offered "I have five bucks in my purse and that's all I have" He looked up at me and smiled real big while he said "I'll take it".
So, now we are the proud owner of a $5.00 blue heeler pup. He's adorable. I named this one. I finally got to name a dog again! Dottie was the last dog I got to name. Sparky was already named (even if it was a dumb name. I guess a dumb name for a dumb dog) and Shael named George and Rosco. I named this pup Corbin. I love the name Corbin and have ever since I was about 18 years old and read this book called "The Mirror". I wanted to name a son Corbin, but Mike didn't like it, so we didn't have that name picked out if Shael would have been a boy. Didn't matter anyway, since she's a girl.
Shael calls the dog Corbin Blue Heeler. A little play on Corbin Blue and Blue Heeler. How clever of her! She gets word play cleverness from her Dad.

Test Day

I've had two tests today. Hmmm.... me thinks me smells a conspiracy.
That means no homework for the weekend! YAY! Oh, unless you count the other FOUR classes I'm stuck with. *sigh*
*
Man, I totally don't have anything to talk about. Can it be true? So, how about a trip through memory lane while I describe my very first grown up kiss by a guy named Brian. While it wasn't in the back seat of Mason's Mom's Mercerize, it was still memorable. It was on a bench at Sycamore Valley Recreation Area (or SVRA to us local yokels) when the sun was sinking behind the big hill and Van Halen's album, 1984, was blasting in the background. To this day I have a fondness for that album. Panama, Jump, all those good ones. Golden oldies these days, but hey, I still like them.
I wanted to pucker my lips, because frankly, I was ignorant in the art of kissing, and silly me, that's how I thought it was done. Oh, heck no, Brian was quick to show me. Now that I think back on it, I'm really surprised he kept his hands to himself the whole time we were sucking face. He really wasn't a gentleman. Must've been our age. And his ignorance, too. Thank goodness for ignorance sometimes.
If I have described this all before (and somehow I have this sneaking suspicion that I have) please forgive me. But, I'm not about to describe the time I lost my virginity. That's a little too personal, and what if my Mom ever stumbled across this? I'd be mortified!
*
Okay, that killed a few minutes. Now I need to go on in to algebra and face the giant. Take that test and ace it. Expect to win, Stacie. That's my new motto. I don't know what my old one was, but, I like this new one. I see it on this white truck every morning at the school. It inspires me every time I see it.
Ta!
Expect To Win

Ain't Misbehavin'

Gosh, I'd better be good, I've got a new reader. I think that brings my grand total up to TWO!
*
I've been everywhere but home the past couple weeks, it seems. Helping Mom clean that horrible, nasty building she calls her work place. That was last week and will be next week, too. I'm sure hoping that by the end of next week we can have it finished so I can quit going up there, I've got things I need to get done, too. My house is pitiful! I've been doing the bare necessities for three weeks now. I got it all good and clean before that and haven't done squat, hardly, since then. I run the dishwasher when we run out of clean plates. (I've even been resorting to using foam plates a couple nights..*gasp!*) The dust rag is probably gathering dust by sitting idle instead of running it across the dusty surfaces of my house. The carpet hasn't even been vacuumed. The kitchen floor gets swept when I step on something gross with socked feet. Maybe once a week. How is it that my kitchen floor gets so disgusting so fast?
This week was a little different. In order to get out of helping clean the beauty shop, I went to a court hearing instead. Stepping out of the frying pan and into the fire. At one point I was playing with my cell phone (which was on silent, naturally, I'm not that rude.....am I?) to distract myself so I wouldn't get down right mad at the man on the stand. He can do it to me.
Tomorrow is Wednesday, I have the day to myself ( I HOPE) because my parents are going out of town for a couple of days which means I won't be obligated to clean the shop. If she says I can continue without her, I'll have to tell her I can't. I really can't tomorrow, anyway, I've got homework. You can probably guess what subject. Science. I've got a lab due and an assignment due. The lab is due Thursday and the assignment is due Friday. So, tomorrow is my only chance to get them done. I also have two tests Thursday that I need to study for.
I feel consumed by college. Anyone else ever feel this way? It's virtually all I think about these days. I'm praying continuously that God would grant me the wisdom and the understanding to get through this with the same high standards I set for myself when I started last spring.
*
I see funny little things that I think will be good blog fodder and they fly right out my head moments after the thought first arises. I should really carry a blog notebook and jog down funny things I see or hear or think of throughout my day. It has been ages since I've thought or even said out loud the phrase "I'm so going to blog about this!"
*
So, what did you do last weekend. I realize it's Tuesday and I'm asking about your weekend a little late, but, better late than never, right? My weekend was pretty fun. Half of it, anyway. That one day was fun enough to make up for the other day that wasn't as fun.
First of all, Saturday. Mike's company picnic was Saturday. We went expecting a cool day, but still nice and crisp, like a typical fall day. What we got was a typical fall day, all right, but the bad kind. It was cold and rainy. I had brought my boots, thank goodness, and I changed into them about 2 minutes after getting out of the car and walking around in the cold. Shael and I both had on hoodies and we were still cold. At one point, we were all three sitting in the car with the heater running. Even Mike!
We stayed there about 3 hours. It was 3 long hours, it felt like 6. We ate fried chicken and potato salad. Shael said "YUM, I want popcorn chicken!" when she saw the giblets. LOL. I had to tell her that it wasn't popcorn chicken, I couldn't be mean and let her eat one and find out for herself. She might've thrown up.
Mike won a nice big camping supply thingie ma bopper. It contained a tent (10X13), two sleeping bags, a soft sided cooler, four cups, four cup coozies, four plates, and four of forks, knifes, and spoons. Now all we need is to go camping.
We went to Neosho from the picnic, which was up by Carthage. We had plans to go see the PBR. We weren't sure if we were going to be able to go because of the rain. It had rained so hard at the picnic but when we got to Neosho, it had hardly rained at all, if it even had rained at all. The bull riding didn't start until 8:00 with the mutton bustin' starting at 7:00. We had nearly 4 hours to spare until then. We went to The Front Page on the square, which is a returns store. All new stuff, but a lot of it is damaged in a small, usually repairable way. Like a missing button, or a tiny hole in the armpit, or a strap twisted, or even mis-sized. We spent a long time there looking for warmer clothes to wear to the bull riding. But none of us found anything. Then we went to Dollar General and found what we wanted right away. Oh, and the junk food Mike bought there. He does not help me at all in my quest to loose weight.
Then we went to Wal-Mart, the evil empire, where I sat in the car and Mike and Shael went in to get her some contacts. They had them in stock so she didn't even have to order them. She's been wearing the same trial pair since July. I was afraid something was going to happen to that one pair before we could get her a box of them. But, nothing ever did.
Finally, we made it to the PBR. It was a BLAST! So fun! The mutton bustin' was absolutely adorable. And if that wasn't cute enough, they also had The Mutton Scramble, where they tied ribbons in the wool of 5 sheep then let all the kids six years and under run after them to grab that ribbon. Those sheep were just moseying around nibbling at the grass at the edge of the arena when WHAMO, here come about 20 little kids running towards them. They took off in a panic, baahhing like mad. It was hilarious. It took them about 10 minutes to get the ribbons. Later on they had a calf scramble for kids 7-12. There were only 3 calves, and they acted the same way as those poor sheep. It was as if I could read their minds "Doopti, doopti, dooo, hmmm, there's a nice clump of grass, mmmm tastes good too....HOLY CRAP! WHAT'S THAT? RUUUUUUNNNNNNN! THEY'RE AFTER US!!!" It actually took the bigger kids longer to get the ribbons off the three calves than it did the little kids and the sheep. Those calves are fast!
*
Well, I'd better hurry up and spell check this puppy and get it posted. My next class starts in 15 minutes and I still have to use the bathroom and all that jazz.
In case it's another week before I post again, have a great week.

Brain Work Out

I think my brain has exercised more today than it has in the past 20 years combined. Well, maybe the past 4 weeks compared to the past 20 years. It's getting a work out, I'm tellin' ya! I just finished my first Physical Science test and it was not nearly as hard as I was anticipating. It was still hard and required several hours of thinking and calculating, but I got it done. It was given in two parts with part 1 being 51 multiple choice problems and part 2 being 20 word problems ( Ex. On Earth, an astronaut and equipment weigh 1960.0 N. While weightless in space, the astronaut fires a 100 N rocket backpack for 2.0 s. What is the resulting velocity of the astronaut and equipment? worth 3 points By the way, the answer was 1 m/s). The old codger went easy on us by using problems that were given in the book, answers and all. Dad blast it, I didn't figure that out until I was finished with the entire multiple choice section. In fact, most of them were in the book. With answers! Next time I'll know better, won't I?
I'm actually doing better in this class than I felt I was doing. My grades so far won't keep my 4.0, but, I don't think I'll be too terribly upset by a B or even a C. Well, maybe I will for a C, but I'll make it.
Well, I'm really getting hungry, it's 1:16 and I've not had anything to eat today, oh, wait! I had two pieces of white bread toast (Yuck, but it was all we had that wasn't green and I draw the line about my love for green at bread) . But, I'm still hungry and I'm suppose to go help Mom some more this afternoon. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. Darn!

Thousand Foot Krutch

THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH
"Breathe You In"
Taking hold, breaking in
The pressures on, need to circulate
Mesmerized and taken in
Moving slow, so it resonates
It's time to rest, not to sleep away
My thoughts alone, try to complicate
I'll do my best, to seek you out
And be myself, and not impersonate
[Chorus:]
I tried so hard to not walk away
And when things don't go my way
I'll still carry on and on just the same

I've always been strong
But can't make this happen
'Cause I need to breathe, I want to breathe you in
The fear of becoming
I'm so tired of running
'Cause I need to breathe, I want to breath you in
I want to breathe you in

I'm going in, so cover me
Your compass will, help me turn the page
The laughing stock, I'll never be
Because I won't let them take me

[Chorus]

Took awhile to see all the love that's around me
Through the highs and lows there's a truth that I've known
And it's you

The story behind the name Thousand Foot Krutch is a cool one. God will always carry us, or let us lean on him (be our crutch) no matter what we think the size our problem is. Hence, God can and will be our Thousand Foot Krutch. Crutch, too, I imagine.

When Do I Get To Become A Grown-Up?

Okay, please forgive me in advance for the whining I know I'm going to be doing about this Physical Science class. It is so hard! I have had a head ache for several weeks now and Mike says it's probably because I've been having to use it. Yes, that is no lie. Usually when I study something, I can read it, sit back and think on it for a few minutes and a solution to the problem comes to me, and if it doesn't I re-read it and sit and think again and I get it figured out in about 5 or 10 minutes. This class has not been like that for me. My gosh, I read it, sit back and think and the only think that goes through my head is "What the heck did I just read?" It's like Greek to me! It's physics, and people, I am no Newton, I assure you. I read it and read it and no solution comes to me, only frustration. On my lab this week, one question got answered with a great big "I DON'T KNOW!" in dark black Sharpie. And the next question got answered with a "?"
I've cried, I've prayed, I've pleaded with God to give me wisdom and understanding. When Mike got home Wednesday, he took one look at me and went "ooo, boy" after releasing a big gush of air. I had been crying over homework! That's ridiculous.
But, I have a consolation tonight. I read the message board for this class, it had 10 new messages on it. People were asking if it was hard and if anyone else was struggling and they all said "YES!!!" In fact, some of them admitted to crying over it. I felt so much better and not alone. We are going to try to get together for a study group and maybe find someone who might be able to explain things to us. One person said they had a graduate student look at it to help them and they didn't understand it, either. Okay, that seemed so not right to me. This is a FRESHMAN course, for heaven's sake! And this professor is not making questions up out of thin air, he is getting his questions directly out of the book.
I'm hoping that once we get out of the Physics portion of the book, it might ease up some. Who knows. All I know is that I can't wait to get this course over with. And why, oh, why, didn't I take Geology instead. Silly me thought it would be hard. I would much rather learn about rocks than gravity and how much force the ground is pushing back on me as I walk across it.
*
Okay, on to other subjects. Today, I opted to spend my day off of school to go to a class. How droll. But, I did. A class on Robert's Rules of Order. Or, Parliamentary Procedure. Before this, my knowledge on Parliamentary Procedure was limited to the stint in Future Homemakers of America (FHA) when I was a senior in high school. We were the only team to show up to the local competition so we automatically qualified for district. We had to place first in district to go on. We barely missed it by coming in 2nd. Of course, there was only one other team we competed against, but who's counting? HA! We SUCKED. We were so bad, it was a total joke, and embarrassing. The only reason we did it was because our home ec teacher made us. We came back to school telling people we came in second. We all promised not to tell anyone there were only two teams, so technically, we came in dead last. Even if there had been 10 teams, I have full confidence we would've still come in dead last. We were that bad.
But now, all these years later, I'm brushing up on my "Mr. Chairman, I make a motion.....I second....Point of Order!...etcetera. etcetera, etcetera. (My impersonation of the King Of Siam) This is the way our tribal meetings go, which is the reason I'm brushing up on this ridiculous way of performing a meeting. I guess it really is a neat and tidy way of holding a meeting, but our meetings are anything but neat and tidy so it all seems a little superfluous. We are hoping to get a handle on this way of order so we can use it against the man.
In previous Roberts Rules (RRO) meetings, I've been told that the instructor kept talking as if this were the way it was in real life. The way it goes on paper in no way represents the way it actually goes down on meeting day. Not with the chairman we have right now. But, today, he was addressing the situation and telling us/showing us how to handle an imperfect situation with a bad chairman.
I really hope we can get this down before the next meeting. Although, I don't really see myself standing up in front of God and everyone in the general council, facing Paul Spicer with a motion. I might be able to learn about parliamentary procedure, but I still know next to nothing about tribal affairs, and I feel I would do the tribe an injustice if I pretended that I did.
Today, though I learned many things, was boring as all get out. Jeez-Louise.
*
Mom has been asking me to help her clean up the beauty shop with her for a couple weeks now. Yesterday was the first chance I got to go up there, even though she was working, I did a little bit. The place is terribly dirty! I suggested calling Merry Maids. I had borrowed some money from her about 6 weeks ago, $120 to be exact, and she told me instead of paying her back I could help her with this. The day I gave her the money she told me to keep it and help me with the shop instead, if I wanted to. Well, an extra $120 in my pocket was needed, so I took her up on her offer. Now I wish I'd just paid her the money. No $120 is worth this! But, she's my Mom and she asked me to help her, so honestly, I'm doing it for her because she asked me. And she really needs help with it, it's too big a job for one person. The cob webs are getting so bad there it looks like Peter Parker has set up residence or something.
*
I have also inherited the official job of High Point! Pilot. What's that? It is the new children's program my Pastor has decided to do on Wednesday nights to replace Missionette's and Royal Rangers. It's really a good program. But, it needed a coordinator, or supervisor, or Pilot, whatever you want to call it. It is sectioned off into 5 week sessions, with new teachers each session. The second session we did it, I volunteered. I said I would be the Pilot. And guess what, I must've been good at it, because my Pastor's wife told me the job is now permanently mine and I was in charge of the whole thing.
Hmm. It is fun, and I do enjoy it. And I do appreciate the fact that each Wednesday night I get a glimpse of my goal, and why I'm going to school in the first place. I just wish I had more time to devote to it. I devote enough to get by, I come 100% prepared each Wednesday night, 30 minutes early, even. I get the other teacher's their stuff by Sunday morning so they have four days to prepare. But, that means nights like Thursday night. Where I stayed up to 1:30 in the morning doing homework so I would have the whole day Friday to help at the beauty shop and all day Saturday to go to that RRO workshop.
I remember many, Many times Pastor Leon would say if you want something to get done and get done right, give the responsibility to the busiest person in the church. I hear his voice in so many things these days. I still miss him so much. But, life goes on. And in my case, in a fury.
I asked this girl to substitute for a teacher who was going to be gone a few weeks ago and she was so excited and told me thank you for thinking of her because she'd wanted to help but didn't know how to ask. So, naturally, I was thinking "All right! Fresh meat! For the next session, I know who to go ask to help" So, I did. The week before I'd need her, I approached her about it and you know what she told me? "Well, I'm going to have to pass for now. I'm still involved in the nursery once a month and now I'm teaching a Sunday School class, so I really don't want to do anymore to miss the big service". I was totally taken aback. I didn't know what to say or how to react, so I just stood there and stared at her for a good 2 or 3 seconds without blinking then said "Oh, OK" and walked away wondering who the heck I was going to get.
I don't want to brag, but I will (HA!). I also am still involved in the nursery and work in there once a month. I have taught the same Sunday School class for 12 years. I'm taking 17 hours in college. And I am not only involved in the High Point! but am heading it off and coordinating it each week. I also have a husband and a family that need my attention.
Oh, well. I tried to let it slide off. I can laugh about it now, in fact, I went to my friend, Vicki's house and told her about it and we both got a good laugh over it. I didn't have to tell her all I do, she already knows, so it was all the sweeter to know I had someone who could see the humor in it with me.

Let's Get Physical

If anybody out there is a genius in Physical Science and would like to do my on line class for me, get in touch with me. I could use some help. AHHHHHH!
